Maui Luaus
One of those events in Hawaii that you just can’t afford to miss is Maui luaus. People from all over the world visit Maui to attend and enjoy the Maui luaus. And most people who attend Maui luaus are extremely satisfied and happy with the festivities in this event and enjoy it a great deal.
But what exactly are Maui luaus?
Maui luaus are basically traditional events, celebrated not only in Maui, but all over the state of Hawaii as well. Though the tradition is several centuries old, the term “luau” was coined to describe it only some 150 years back. Earlier, before the term “luau” was created, the term “aha’aina” was used to describe the celebrations related with this event. However, the festivities and events associated with Maui luaus have more-or-less been preserved through the centuries and are celebrated with the same zest as in the early days. In the ancient days, the Hawaiians would host these feasts to celebrate special occasions, for example the launch of a new canoe, or the first birthday of their baby.
The Maui luaus of today still preserve the same practices. It is generally thought that you can be considered a part of the family, known in Hawaii as “ohana”, only if you participate whole-heartedly in the Maui luaus.
Maui luaus is a happy time. There are a lot of enjoyable and wonderful things to participate in and make merry. A party is generally thrown, with lots of food, drink, music, dance and people, on the event of Maui luau. This distinguishes Maui luau from the other Hawaiian festivals.
There can be no Maui luaus without some wonderful food. A roasted pig is the major highlight of this celebration. Raw marinated fish, known as poke, is also served during the occasion of Maui luaus. Some other traditional dishes cooked in this fun-filled food fiesta are lomi lomi salmon, haupia, poi, chicken long rice. Such exotic fares are given to every guest to relish. Many American dishes, like beef, chicken, salads, fruits, desserts, vegetables, and an open bar are also present in Maui luaus. However, there are a host of other things to enjoy apart from the great food.
As an example, you have fabulous music and dance in Maui luaus. In fact, these come a close second to the fabulous food. According to some experts, music and dance are vital part of the Maui luaus as they represent Hawaiian culture. Hence, hula and other such endemic dances are always showcased in the luaus. Some other music relayed activities which are also featured in this festival are the drums of Tahiti, the dancers of Samoa, the dances from Fiji and Tonga, and the Maori of New Zealand.
All the celebrations of Maui luaus are conducted only after sunset, which adds that special romantic touch to the party, thus making it one of the best enjoyable events in Maui.
