Maui, also known as the “Valley Isle” of Hawaii, is its second largest island with an area of about 729 square miles. The population of the island is around 117,644, most of which is comprised of Caucasians. Some other ethnic groups who are the residents of Maui are Japanese, Hawaiian, Chinese and Filipino. The three biggest towns of Maui Hawaii are Kahului, Wailuku, and Lahaina. The biggest airport of Hawaii is at Kahului. However a small one operates in Kapalua too, a town located towards the west of Maui.

Tourism is the biggest industry of Maui Hawaii. Around 2.2 million visitors come here every year. No wonder Maui Hawaii is known as “the best island in the world”. Apart from tourism, other major industries include crops like sugar and pineapple, cattle, and diversified agriculture.

Maui Hawaii has miles of swimmable coastline, which is the biggest in the entire Hawaii. Approximately 3000 whales migrate to these Hawaiian waters during the winter. In fact Maui Hawaii is considered to be the biggest breeding ground for humpback whales. Maui Hawaii caters to the large number of tourists which visit it every year by its ten parks, eighteen golf courses, sixteen hotels, one hundred three condominiums with 7343 units. The Haleakala National Park, Lahaina Town, Hana and the Maui Ocean Center are the major tourist draws.

Different areas of Maui Hawaii have different climates. The average temperature of the island is around 71 degrees in winter and 78 degrees in summer. Thus, the climate is tropical. However, as a means of relief from the high temperature, a constant breeze from northeast, traveling at around 5-15 miles an hour, blows here, which increases humidity and makes heat much tolerable by cooling the air.

It is interesting to explore the island on car, and drive around it. Mauka (towards the mountain) and Makai (toward the sea) are generally heard here instead of “north” and “south”. Honking is supposed to be a sign of an ill mannered person here, so almost no sound of honks is heard, even during traffic hours. However, care should be taken while driving near the island. Accidents have occurred when drivers suddenly pressed breaks on seeing even the tail of a whale, which is a very common sight.

Before visiting Maui, it is better if you take some care and chalk out the whole itinerary well ahead. Booking the rooms in the hotel of your choice is necessary to secure your stay in reputed hotels. Bring a map along with your video camera. And learn a little more of the native language, something more than a simple “aloha“.
